Senior lecturer in photography Ian Rotherham features in the latest issue of F11, an Auckland-based, international web publication for photography aficionados.

Ian has been teaching photography at UCOL for 10 years and F11 says he lives what he teaches, and practices what he preaches. “He’s a Polaroid aficionado, and we’re delighted to share some of his instant pictures with you.”

The featured photographs include several taken by Ian during research by a team of Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging lecturers on trends in typography in signage.

On teaching, he says: “There’s an old saying: ‘Those who can do, and those who can’t teach’. But I’d rather stand up in front of 200 people at a wedding (which I’ve done hundreds of times) than, tethered to a 40” screen, shoot a portrait in a third-year class and face the prospect of — if that shot isn’t perfect first time — having 20 critics picking it apart… and they can smell fear. The other side of that saying is: “Those who can, can’t always teach” – respect to all teachers. Read More: “Ian Rotherham in black and white (and colour)”…

UCOL Deputy Chief Executive Academic Bonnie Dewart has thrown down a challenge to sixty young students. “I want to see you all walk across the stage at the Regent and graduate this time next year.”

Bonnie was speaking at a presentation ceremony last week where the 16 and 17 year olds received scholarships under the Youth Guarantee Scheme.

The scholarships are aimed at teenagers who are ready for a new educational challenge, have made a start towards NCEA, want to enrol in full time tertiary study, and want to learn practical skills.

Funded by the Ministry of Education, and administered and delivered by UCOL, the scheme allows students to participate in tertiary education without accumulating debt.  Read More: “Young UCOL students challenged to succeed”…

Whanganui UCOL’s popular Certificate in Art and Design level four programme will also be offered in Palmerston North from next month.

Whanganui UCOL Head of Creative Programmes Sally-Jane de Salazar said “there is a gap in Palmerston North for a qualification at this level, and this is an opportunity for us. Our certificate provides a natural pathway for people interested in art and design but who aren’t yet ready to enrol in a degree programme. It appeals to people who want to create and find out more about original art and design. It can also be used as a foundation programme for those who want to go on to further study on our arts and design degree programmes.

“The Certificate in Art and Design appeals to school leavers with an interest in the creative industries and practicing artists or designers who want to broaden their practice or create employment opportunities. Students learn about drawing, painting, computer graphic design, and New Zealand art history. Read More: “Arts and Design Degrees Get Potential Boost”…

The debut of Whanganui UCOL School of Fashion graduate is being featured as a highlight of Wellington Fashion week.

Kelsey’s label, Kelsey Genna, will make its debut at Wellington Fashion Week, held from 18 April to 22 April.

Designs by 20 year old Kelsey feature in The Dominion Post’s Life publication this week, described as from “the hot new label”.

Kelsey Thompson has spent the past 12 months establishing her brand since graduating from Whanganui UCOL with a Bachelor in Fashion.

The Dominion Post reports that all her pieces are made in Wellington and styles are limited to editions of 10.

The label is online at kelseygenna.com. Since launching, most of her customers are based overseas. “Wellington Fashion Week should be a good way to get a little local exposure,” Kelsey says.
