Eight UCOL Performing Arts students have parts in this year’s Summer Shakespeare production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The play is directed by Performing Arts Programme Leader, Jaime Dorner, as Palmerston North’s Visiting Artist for 2011. Film tutor for the Performing Arts Programme, Melissa Edmon, has also directed a short film which will be shown during the play.

The music for both the play and the film was composed by UCOL’s Contemporary Music Programme Leader Kane Parsons.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream opens this week and Jaime says all of his students have been working hard and doing very well. “Some of the parts are quite challenging and require a lot of energy and focus. The production is very physical and a little darker and more intense than traditional audiences might be used to. But it will be very beautiful.”

He says it is great experience for the UCOL students who will be performing before bigger audiences than UCOL Performing Arts productions can usually attract. The season is also much longer, requiring students to sustain their performances.

The play will be staged at the Victoria Esplanade Rose Gardens in Palmerston North.  The Wet Weather Venue is the Auditorium in the Sir Geoffrey Peren Building at the University campus.

The first night is on Thursday 10 March at 7 p.m. For the first season, performances run from March 10 to12 at 7pm, with a matinee on 13 March at 3.30pm, then again from 17 March to19 March at 7pm. Entry is by donation.

Palmerston North’s Visiting Artist Scheme is a collaborative venture between Massey University’s School of English and Media Studies, the Palmerston North City Council and Community Arts Palmerston North. This year’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the ninth in a series of annual Manawatu Summer Shakespeare productions

The UCOL students taking part are: Jacob Dale (Demetrius): Adam Brown (Lysander); Katriona Tipene (Cobweb); Hanna Jones (Moth); Brendan Barribals (Flute); Disel McGrath (Snug); Michael Jones and Kristin Russell  (dance fairies).
